「される」は分かった？ じゃあ、似てる「させる」について。
Did you get “saReru”? Then I’ll explain about “saSeru”, which looks similar to “される”.
someone に～（さ）せる
means both “to make (force) someone (to) do”
and “to let someone do”.
When you force someone, it is against someone’s will, and usually only for your sake.
While if you let someone, it is because the person wants to do so.
So it seems like the complete opposite, but in both situations, YOU are the boss. You can force and allow.
Anyways, how do Japanese people know if it’s “force” or “let”? – It is relied on contexts.
However when it means “let”, often “て+くれる/あげる/もらう” is added and it is better.
Just like how you change verbs into negative.
-iru, -eru verbs -> get rid of る (like you did to get られる form) and put させる。
食べる tabERU -> 食べさせる tabeSASERU
（例）無理矢理 （むりやり）(forcibly):
お母さんは妹に野菜を食べさせた。
My mum made my younger sister eat veggies.
許可する(to permit):
せがまれたから、ケーキをもう一つだけ食べさせた。
I was begged, so I let her /him eat only one more pice of cake.
＝ケーキをもう一つだけ食べさせてあげた。
-> お母さんは私にケーキを食べさせてくれた。 My mum let me eat a piece of cake.
続ける tsuzukERU to continue -> 続けさせる tsuzukeSASERU
（例）無理矢理:
コーチは選手に１時間以上走り続けさせた。
A coach forced players to continue to run over an hour.
許可する:
息子にゲームを続けさせた。 I let my son continue playing the game.
＝息子にゲームを続けさせてあげた。
->お父さんは俺にゲームを続けさせてくれた。 My dad let me continue the game.
Other verbs (and irregular -iru, eru ending verbs : e.g 帰る・切る・出る・入る)
-> Change U into A and put せる.
飲む nomU to drink -> 飲ませる nomASERU
（例）無理矢理:
娘は嫌がっていたが、薬を飲ませた。
My daughter was not willing to take pills, but I made her take them.
許可する:
体には悪いけど、コーラが飲みたいと言ったから、飲ませた。
（飲ませてあげた。）
Although it’s bad for your health, s/he said s/he wants to drink cola, I let her/ him drink it.
選ぶ erabU to choose -> 選ばせる erabASERU
（例）無理矢理:
お腹がぺこぺこだったから、何を注文するか早く選ばせた。 I was starving, so I made him /her/them choose quickly what s/he (they) wants to order.
許可する:
子供に欲しいおもちゃをなんでも選ばせた。
I let my child choose any toy s/he wants.
行く ikU -> 行かせる ikASERU
（例）無理矢理:
息子に歯医者に行きたくないと泣かれたが、なんとか行かせることができた。 My son cried saying that he doesn’t wanna go to the dentist (and it was troublesome) but I somehow managed to make him go there.
許可する:
一人でヨーロッパに行かせてあげた。
I let (allowed) him /her go to Europe alone.
帰る kaerU -> 帰らせる kaerASERU
（例）無理矢理:
他の社員に風邪を移してほしくなかったので、彼を帰らせた。
I made him go home, because I did not want him to pass a cold to other employees.
許可する:
帰らせて！ Let me go home!
Verbs that end in う -> Change う into わ and put せる.
言う iu -> 言わせる iWASERU
無理矢理:
犯罪者は脅して、どこに金があるか、被害者に言わせた。
The criminal threatened the victim and made him tell him where money is.
許可する:
最後に、一つだけ言わせてください。
Let me say one last thing.
買う kaU -> 買わせる kaWASERU
無理矢理:
お金がない学生に、車を買わせた。
They made a student who doesn’t have much money buy a car.
許可する:
Sugar-daddyとは、女の子になんでも買わせる男のことです。
Sugar-daddy is a guy who lets girls buy whatever they want.
Irregular :
する suru -> させる sASERU (!! The negative form of する is しない)
（例）無理矢理:
息子には東大に合格してもらいたいので、毎日１２時間勉強させています。
I want my son to get into Tokyo University, so I’ve been making him study for 12 hours everyday.
許可する:
東大に合格してくれたので、これからは何でも好きなことをさせてあげようと思います。
He got into Tokyo University, so from now on, I intend to let him do whatever he wants to do.
来る kuru -> 来させる kOSASERU (Like negative : 来ない KOnai)
（例）無理矢理:
保護者を緊急で学校に来させた。
They made the guardians come to the school urgently.
許可する:
車でしか来ないと言うから、車で来させてあげた。
He said he would only come here by car, so I let him come by car.
